Dr. Ashley Mulamoottil, Eye Surgeon and social activist, graduated in medicine and procured an MS in Ophthalmology from Kasturba Medical College, Manipal. Subsequently he attained the DNB (Ophth) from the National Board of Examinations while pursuing a fellowship in Diabetic Retinopathy, Retinal Diseases and Laser at the famous Aravind Eye Hospital, Coimbatore.
Dr. Ashley obtained the prestigious Sir Ratan Tata Fellowship in Advanced Cataract Micro Surgery at the world famous Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai. Having completed specialized training in Cataract Microsurgery, Diabetic Retinopathy, Retinal Diseases and Laser, he obtained a fellowship at the International Council of Ophthalmology (FICO) and proceeded for training in Pediatric Ophthalmology at the prestigious Moorfields Eye Hospital in London. He subsequently obtained a Membership at the Royal College of Ophthalmologists of London (MRCOphth).
Dr. Ashley, a member of the European Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons; the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons, is trained in Immediate Life Support; the only ophthalmologist with this distinction. He is also a Paul Harris Fellow (PHF) of Rotary International and has also to his credit a first rank in the M.Ch (Ophthalmology) certification program of the American Institute of Medicine.
A direct descendant of the famous Ayurveda eye physician, the late Vaidyaratnam Mulamoottil Mathen Mathai , Dr. Ashley resides at the ancestral house in Kozhencherry. Besides being an expert in the field of modern eye care, Dr. Ashley has authored several articles, videos, and books for promoting awareness about Eye Care; especially healthy vision in Children, which is one of the key activities of the Mulamoottil Eye Foundation, formed under his initiative and vision. His ideas on the usage of outdoor play, evening sunlight, eye exercises and healthy food habits to prevent short-sight in preschool children have been successfully implemented by thousands of parents.The foundation also organizes schemes and projects to fight blindness in different ways and is actively involved in providing health education to public on eye-related topics.
Dr. Ashley Mulamoottil is the first and only eye surgeon trained to perform Laser Cataract Surgery (Blade-free cataract surgery) in Kerala State, India. He is considered the pioneer of blade-free surgeries.
